A Practical Guide to Respectful Maternity Care
Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) is a rights-based approach that describes care upholding dignity, confidentiality, and freedom from harm. How a person experiences care influences their adherence to recommendations, their stress levels, and their sense of safety. The goal of this course is to improve the patient experience and safety during perinatal care by equipping healthcare teams with the skills to consistently practice Respectful Maternity Care (RMC).
Target Audience
Healthcare workers and other professionals who see and interact with pregnant and postpartum patients.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the core patient rights as defined by the Respectful Maternity Care charter.
- Differentiate between trauma-informed communication and standard clinical instructions in a patient scenario.
- Apply the key components of the TeamBirth model to a shared decision-making scenario.
- Analyze a complex clinical situation where a patient refuses medically necessary treatment to determine the correct procedural steps.
- Evaluate a care scenario to identify violations of RMC and propose specific corrective actions.
