Elizabeth Unger, PhD, MD
Elizabeth R. Unger, PhD, MD, was chief of the Chronic Viral Diseases Branch in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2010 until her retirement, September 1, 2025. In that role she was responsible for guiding research and public health studies encompassing molecular pathology and epidemiology of human papillomavirus-associated diseases and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). As part of her CDC tenure, Dr. Unger served as co-lead of the Post-COVID Conditions Team in the CDC COVID-19 Response and leveraged understanding of ME/CFS to address Long COVID and to advance research and treatment for both conditions. She was a member of the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council ME/CFS Research Roadmap Working Group.
