This presentation reviews common errors encountered in the use of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) including simple scoring and administration mistakes. We will also identify errors that commonly occur in cognitively normal individuals such as semantic substitutions on naming tasks (for example, hippo for rhinoceros), as well as demographic influences on performance. Finally, the presentation will conclude by discussing the major interpretive risk of treating a single MoCA score as a fixed and comprehensive estimate of global cognition without accounting for measurement error, test-retest variability, and contextual clinical factors.
