Physician Assistant Leadership Superstars (PALS) Preceptor Training Workshop

The PALS (Physician Assistant Leadership Superstars) Preceptor Training Program is an educational activity designed to prepare Physician Assistants to effectively supervise, teach, and mentor PA students in clinical settings. This program addresses the growing need for qualified preceptors, particularly in rural and underserved communities, by equipping participants with evidence-based strategies to enhance clinical education, team leadership, quality improvement, integrated care delivery, patient- and family-centered practices, and healthcare advocacy. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be better prepared to function as effective clinical preceptors, foster high-performing multidisciplinary teams, support learners in complex healthcare environments, and contribute to improved patient outcomes. The program ultimately aims to strengthen the clinical training pipeline and expand access to high-quality care by increasing the number of skilled preceptors serving diverse populations. This training is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under Grant No. D57HP35367.

Target Audience

This educational activity is designed for certified Physician Assistants (PAs) practicing in primary care settings, specifically those working in family medicine, pediatrics, and internal medicine. The program is particularly relevant for PAs who currently serve as clinical preceptors or are interested in becoming preceptors for physician assistant students.

While the primary audience is PAs in family medicine, pediatrics, and internal medicine, the activity may also benefit other primary care clinicians who participate in teaching or mentoring roles within clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate leadership strategies for guiding high-performing, multidisciplinary care teams in integrated primary care settings.

2. Apply the Model for Improvement and PDSA cycles to test and measure clinical changes that enhance care quality.

3. Implement evidence-based integrated care practices, including screening algorithms, motivational interviewing (MI), SBIRT, and MOUD, with special consideration for pediatric populations.

4. Incorporate patient- and family-centered care principles and mindfulness techniques into everyday clinical practice and teaching.

5. Describe the role of health professionals in policy and advocacy, including developing and communicating policy solutions through written and oral advocacy.

6. Support PA student learning and professional development through improved clinical teaching, supervision, and mentorship in rural and underserved communities.
