Jocelyn Mallard, MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC
Jocelyn Mallard is a pediatric nurse practitioner specializing in sickle cell disease (SCD) care. She has been working with this complex patient population for over 20 years in inpatient and outpatient settings. She educates families and patients about SCD, the complications and current treatments available. Mallard led the Sickle Cell Community Engagement Committee for 2 years planning outreach activities to highlight SCD in the community. Access to healthy food is important for everyone, but most importantly for people suffering from chronic illness. Understanding the relationship between nutrition and optimal health has led her to serve on the Medical Advisory Board for the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. Certified in Plant based cooking from Roube and plant based nutrition from eCornell, she combines her knowledge of sickle cell disease and nutrition to inform others about comprehensive disease management – using disease modifying medicines in combination with making wise food choices. Partnering with Plant-based Nutrition Movement to provide “food as medicine” education to people with chronic illness specifically sickle cell disease has been a highlight of her career. Currently she is working with a dynamic team to further develop an education program that educates sickle cell warriors on the relationship between disease complications and nutrition deficiencies. She eagerly collaborates with dieticians, urban farmers, community-based organizations and people with SCD.
