Melvin Echols

Dr. Melvin R. Echols, MD, MSCR, FACC, FASPC, FHFSA is an academic cardiologist and Associate Professor of Medicine and Chief Health Equity Officer at the American College of Cardiology. He serves as the Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at Morehouse School of Medicine. Dr. Echols earned his medical degree from Morehouse and completed his residency and cardiovascular fellowship at Duke University. His work focuses on heart failure in underserved populations, contributing to their management. His research interests include heart failure (particularly high-risk Stage B), clinical trial equity, and healthcare disparities. A native of rural North Carolina, he is dedicated to improving cardiovascular health in these areas. With over 15 years of leadership in clinical trial diversity, Dr. Echols addresses healthcare disparities and advocates for cardiovascular health equity. He plays a vital role in several federal studies, integrating cutting-edge research at the CVRI with clinical practice. His academic leadership includes serving as Program Director for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at MSM and currently directs the Thad & Gerry Waites Rural Cardiovascular Research Fellowship for ACC, co-directs the REIMAGINE-HF initiative for HFSA, and is an HF clinical trialist involved with organizations such as the Association of Black Cardiologists, the Heart Failure Collaboratory, the ACC, and HFSA. Dr. Echols has editorial influence with journals such as JACC and the Journal of Cardiac Failure. His work with the ACC Health Equity Task Force and Diversity committees has been instrumental in developing innovative frameworks that promote equitable care for all.
