Jaya was born and raised in the Bay Area and she is the middle child to two brothers. She grew up in a tight-knit family filled with mostly women so pregnancy was around me her whole life. She was always there when family members came home helping care for them and the baby in whatever she could. Jaya started out as a pre-school teacher and a special education teacher’s assistant, both roles she enjoyed. She did her first official doula training in 2018 and immediately knew she had found her place. Learning about the birth disparities black women face and personal experience from her own birth made her drive to help women of color come alive. She has a special interest in breastfeeding as well and hopes she can help more black women have successful breastfeeding journeys. As an aspiring midwife and she knows that being a doula will help her in her journey there. 

Jaya chose to work with SisterWeb because she wants to help other birthing people experience power in their birth and postpartum time. When she had her daughter she had some of her power taken away from her and she wants to help other birthing people know their rights so that can never happen. She chose this path because she wants to make sure they feel loved, protected, well informed, and heard. Jaya sees it as her responsibility to her community to be of service and purposeful in the care she provides.
