Dr. Brittany Chambers Butcher is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Davis in the Departments of Human Ecology and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Rooted in my her personal experiences with injustices navigating healthcare systems as a Black mother and centered at the intersections of public health, public policy, and family studies, her research program has two focus areas: (1) reconceptualizing racism from Black women’s perspectives; and (2) designing and evaluating reproductive and birth justice-centered institutional- and policy-level interventions tailored towards learners and perinatal providers. Her research across these two areas centers on the experiences of Black women and integrates community-partnered research methods and principles. Through an innovative community research model, Dr. Chambers Butcher partnered with community members to publish the first conceptual framework of structural racism for the field of maternal and child health. Peers and leaders in the field have recognized her scholarly impact with prestigious awards several times, including, but not limited to, the following: 1) the 2023 Outstanding Young Professional Award of the Maternal and Child Health Section of the American Public Health Association; 2) the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)-Kaiser Building Interdisciplinary Research in Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) K12 Program; 3) the UCSF Population Health and Health Equity Award Scholar; and 4) a K01 Research Grant with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities.
