Heather M. Rice, PhD, CPNP-PC, PMHS, FAAN is an Associate Professor and Research Scientist in the College of Health (School of Nursing) at Cleveland State University. She is also a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Rice earned her PhD in Nursing Science and MSN from Case Western Reserve University, a BSN from Lakeview College of Nursing, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Wittenberg University. Dr. Rice’s research focuses on Black maternal and infant health, mental health, birth equity, chronic stress, and reducing maternal and infant mortality within African American communities. Her work addresses persistent disparities in maternal outcomes by developing culturally responsive, community-centered interventions that improve pregnancy experiences and birth outcomes. Dr. Rice also developed THRIVE, a digital application created to support Black families throughout their parenting journey. THRIVE serves as a comprehensive resource that connects families to education, screening tools, community resources, and supportive services from pregnancy through the postpartum period. The platform was intentionally designed to empower families, strengthen social support networks, and address barriers that contribute to inequitable maternal and infant outcomes. As principal investigator of several interdisciplinary research initiatives, Dr. Rice studies innovative models of care that integrate community partnerships, technology, and culturally competent services, including doula and midwifery care. She currently leads a multi-phase, state-funded initiative evaluating holistic strategies designed to reduce Black maternal health disparities. By centering Black women’s lived experiences, her research informs policy and systems-level change aimed at creating safer pregnancies and healthier families.
