Asmara Gebre, CNM, MSN, is a midwife, scholar, and Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the UCSF School of Medicine. Her work is grounded in Black feminist theory, reproductive justice, and the legacy of Black midwives as community healers. She provides full-scope midwifery care at San Francisco General Hospital and is pursuing her PhD in nursing science at UCSF as a Cota-Robles Fellow and ACTIONS Predoctoral Fellow.

Asmara is the Founder and Co-Director of Black Centering, a culturally concordant, community-centered program in San Francisco that supports Black families from pregnancy through the first two years of life. She launched its midwifery-led prenatal group care, an adaptation of CenteringPregnancy that includes co-management with high-risk obstetric care, and the program has since grown in partnership with family medicine to include postpartum home visits, family group care, and wraparound community programming and resources.

She is also the Founder and Director of the Black Midwifery Fellowship in California, a tribute to the Black midwives who provided full-scope reproductive care, including abortion care, long before it was criminalized. Today the fellowship trains certified nurse-midwives as one effort to reclaim full-scope midwifery care. Its fellows also serve as midwives within Black Centering and on call at San Francisco General Hospital, building a culturally concordant midwifery workforce and continuity of care for Black families.
