Chanel L. Porchia-Albert, CD, CPD, CLC, CHHC is an internationally recognized birth justice leader, policy strategist, and maternal health innovator whose work has transformed how communities, institutions, and governments understand and support pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. As the Founder and President of Ancient Song, Inc., Chanel has built a nationally respected model for community-based doula training, direct service, and legislative advocacy focused on eliminating maternal and infant mortality among Black and Brown families.

Her leadership extends beyond service delivery into systems change. Chanel has trained hundreds of doulas, supported thousands of families, and led efforts to advance Medicaid reimbursement for doulas across multiple states, helping to establish sustainable pathways for community-based birth workers within public health systems.

Chanel’s expertise is sought at the highest levels of policy and research. Her work has informed national conversations with partners such as the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Ariadne Labs, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. She has advised on respectful care frameworks, contributed to maternal health policy development, and was interviewed by Kamala Harris in recognition of her impact on Black maternal health.

Her influence is global. Chanel has served as a maternal health strategist in Uganda and is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Health in Ethiopia to establish hospital-based doula programs and training models that center dignity, human rights, and culturally grounded care.

Chanel also serves as a Commissioner on the United States Commission on Civil Rights, representing the State of New Jersey, where she contributes to federal civil rights analysis and recommendations that intersect with maternal health, racial equity, and public policy.

A Commissioner on the NYC Commission for Gender Equity and a trusted voice in reproductive and birth justice, and is dedicated to transforming maternal health systems, uplifting community wisdom, and ensuring that every mother, child, and family is met with safety, respect, and care.
