Karey M. Sutton, PhD, is Scientific Director for Health Equity Research at MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI), where she leads the strategy and growth of health equity research and the MHRI Center for Health Equity Research. Her work focuses on addressing health disparities, structural inequities, and social determinants of health across patient engagement, digital health, patient safety, diagnostics, and chronic disease management.

Prior to joining MHRI, Dr. Sutton spent nearly a decade at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), where she helped launch the AAMC Center for Health Justice and build the capacity of academic medical centers to conduct community-engaged, solutions-focused health equity research. She was named a National Minority Quality Forum 40 Under 40 Leader in Health and has contributed her expertise to national and local initiatives addressing maternal health and health equity.

Dr. Sutton earned undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Classical Civilization from Howard University and a PhD in Science and Technology Policy from Virginia Tech. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine’s Center for Genomics in Society.
