Riba Kelsey, MD, FAAFP

Dr. Riba C. Kelsey is a family physician and medical educator who serves as the Family Medicine Residency Program Director and Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM). She joined the Morehouse School of Medicine faculty in 2003 after completing her medical school and residency training at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, serving as Chief Resident and later as faculty. While there, she co-developed a pregnancy care curriculum for the Family Medicine Residency Program and earned the OB Faculty Award for teaching obstetrics to Family Medicine residents.
Prior to her current roles at MSM, Dr. Kelsey served as the Family Medicine Director of Medical Student Education, the National Center for Primary Care (NCPC) Associate Director of Education, Director of the NCPC Longitudinal Faculty Development Program, and Family Medicine Associate Residency Program Director. She serves on numerous committees at the institution and is the immediate past Chair of the Institutional Effectiveness Committee.
In the MSM Office of Graduate Medical Education, Dr. Kelsey is responsible for the integrated GME curriculum, which includes Business of Medicine, Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, Health Equity, and Well-Being components along with New and Continuing Resident Orientations. Additionally, she is instrumental in the More in Common Alliance GME initiatives, including establishing new and enhancing existing GME programs in several CommonSpirit hospitals, presently including Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield, CA; California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA; and Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, CA. ongoing program and faculty development at Dominican Hospital, California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, and Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield, CA, where she also engages in faculty and program leadership development. Other contributions to the Morehouse School of Medicine GME enterprise include co-development of the Health Equity resident rotation curriculum, the first GME-Wide rotation at the institution, initiation of the “Clinical Topics from a Health Equity Lens” series for residents and fellows, and leading the COVID-19 Update webinar series in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, a series that gained national reach.
Dr. Kelsey has been a presenter at the American Academy of Family Physicians Residency Leadership Summit, Society for Teachers of Family Medicine Medical Student Education Conference, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians Summer Conference, Association of Hospital Medical Educators regional conference, and the National Medical Association Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly. She has served on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Family Medicine Task Force and as an item-writer for the NBME Family Medicine Subject Examination and the Association for Family Medicine Residency Directors National Program Directors’ Toolbox Task Force. She is the current Georgia Oral Health Champion for the 100 Million Mouths Campaign and the Chair of the National Medical Association Family Medicine Section.
As a clinical and administrative leader, Dr. Kelsey has served as Vice-Chair of Family Medicine at Atlanta Medical Center and as a member of the hospital’s Central Peer Review and Medical Executive Committees prior to the hospital’s 2022 closing.
Dr. Kelsey is passionate about providing health education in the lay community and has been an invited presenter by the Tawi Family Village in Columbus, OH and the Kemetic Institute for Health and Human Development in Columbia, SC and an invited guest on Roland Martin Unfiltered and Urban View Mornings on Sirius XM.
Dr. Kelsey is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She is celebrated locally and nationally for her commitment to resident education and providing exceptional patient care. Recognized for her exemplary leadership and dedication to medical education, Dr. Kelsey was honored as the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians’ 2022 Educator of the Year and has earned numerous other accolades, including the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, and twice, the MSM Graduate Medical Education Faculty Member of the Year. Through her approachability and steadfast pursuit of excellence, she is a trusted mentor and clinician, inspiring the next generation of family physicians.
