Mary Jo Wagner, MD

Dr. Mary Jo Wagner is currently the Chief Academic Officer and Designated Institutional Official at CMU Medical Education Partners and was previously the Program Director of the Emergency Medicine (EM) Residency Program for 14 years. She is Professor of EM at Central Michigan University (CMU) College of Medicine and Clinical Professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Wagner graduated from Boston University School of Medicine and trained at the St. Vincent Medical Center/The Toledo Hospital EM residency program.
As a leader in Graduate Medical Education (GME), Dr. Wagner has been active in the ACGME representing EM including her role as a member of the Review Committee, a representative at the Duty Hours Congress and a member of the EM Milestones Workgroup. Dr. Wagner’s most enduring efforts for GME were her initiation & advocacy of Section 422 in the U.S. Medicare Modernization and Prescription Drug Law of 2003 which provided redistribution of ~3,500 GME residency positions and set the process used for the past 20 years by the federal government. Since that time, she has shared her expertise on residency funding, budgeting and innovative methods of financing medical innovation to thousands of educators.
